COMMITTEE OF THE REGIONS

The Committee of the Regions ensures that the opinion of regional and local identities are respected, as many decisions taken in the EU have direct implications at the local and regional level.

The 344 Members of the Committee are nominated at the recommendation of the Member States by the Council of the European Union for a renewable term of four years. The number from each Member State approximately reflects the population size. Being municipal or regional politicians, the members of the Committee represent the entire range of local and regional government activities in the European Union. They may be regional presidents, regional parliamentarians, town councillors, mayors of large cities, etc. The Committee of the Regions appoints a President from among its members, for a term of two years. The President chairs the plenary sessions and represents the Committee to the outside world.

The seat of the Committee of the Regions is in Brussels.
