Resignation of Jeleva was "inevitable and predictable"

The resignation of Bulgarian candidate for the European Commission Rumiana Jeleva was "inevitable and predictable", said S&D leader Martin Schulz in Strasbourg today.

"Her decision to go is the best outcome vor everyone, including herself," he said. "After such a poor performance in the parliamentary, which highlighted her incompetence, this outcome was both inevitable and predictable.

""I regret the way in which the EPP group tried desperately to save her despite her performance. It was a serious mistake to put political allegiance before basic competence to do the job.

"My group will do everything we can to expedite the hearing of a new Bulgarian candidate. We urge Prime Minister Borisov to reflect carefully on his nomination."
