Citizens of EU countries allowed transit through Serbia with ID cards

The Serbian Interior Ministry's border management department has decided that citizens of EU countries will not need passports for transit through Serbia, only their national identity cards. The decision has been made in response to requests by several EU embassies.

According to a statement issued by the Interior Ministry, air traffic to all European destinations has been halted because of volcanic ash being dispersed into the air after a volcanic eruption on Iceland.

Citizens of EU countries cannot return home by air and have to use alternative means of transport.

Citizens of EU countries are not obliged to carry passports if they have other means of identification while travelling within the EU.

Head of the border police administration Nenad Banovic explained that this decision was made on humanitarian grounds so that citizens of EU countries may return to their homes.

This decision will be valid until air traffic returns to normal.
