THE MENTIONING OF BULGARIA IN THE CONTEXT OF THE SCANDAL IN ITALY
The Bulgarian observers to the EP Mrs. Cappone and Mr. Abadjiev have sent a letter to all MEPs informing them on the circumstances in which Bulgaria was involved in the so-called Italian Savoia affair.
Portal EUROPE offers you this letter, as well as the report produced in 2004 by the investigation parliamentary committee on the alleged frauds concerning the construction of a children hospital in Sofia:
Dear Members,
In the last couple of days, the name of the former Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria Simeon Saxe-Coburg Gotha has been involved in a scandal concerning Italy's Prince Victor Emmanuel of Savoia.
In this context, we would like to assure you that already in 2004, upon a request of the opposition, the 39th Bulgarian National Assembly took all the required action in the case of the contract for design, construction and equipment of a new paediatric university hospital by examining the investment project and not ratifying the deal. For this purpose, the Bulgarian Assembly set up a Temporary Investigation Committee which produced a report on the issue (you will find enclosed a copy of this report in English). As a result, the investment project was not implemented.

Taking into consideration this report and the steps taken by the Bulgarian Parliament 2 years ago, we hope that the scandal in Italy will not be used to harm the image of Bulgaria and the efforts of our country towards a timely accession to the European Union.
Sincerely yours,
Dimitar Abadjiev
Maria Cappone
