Austria restores border control
Austria temporarily restores its border control, as part of a large-scale operation for improving security during the European Football Championship which starts on Saturday, Kafene.net announced. The Austrian and Swiss hosts are expecting 5 million fans which shall support their teams during the championship.
Austria is part of EU's Shengen passport-free travel zone. The country, however, reintroduces the control over its borders with Germany, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic during the Championship.
The Shengen zone rules allow member countries to restore their border control for national security reasons. Representatives of police authorities from more than 18 European countries shall assist the Austrian police in her attempts to catch hooligans well-known to the police which try to attend the event.
